Jointing sand or jointing mortar? Choose the right solution for your project
Anyone installing a patio, garden path or driveway knows the joints often make the difference. Joints not only complete the look; they also protect against weeds, rain and wear. Still, it’s not always clear whether you should opt for jointing sand or jointing mortar. In this article, we explain what to consider when making that choice, the properties of both materials, and how to find the right solution for your project.
Jointing sand vs. jointing mortar: the difference at a glance
Jointing sand is the most traditional way to finish paving. The sand is simply swept into the joints and provides a natural, permeable finish. However, classic jointing sand also has drawbacks: it can wash out during heavy rain or be disturbed by weeds and ants, which means more frequent maintenance.
Jointing mortar, by contrast, is a blend of sand and binder that cures after application. This makes the joints stronger and more resistant to intensive use. Moreover, the surface remains permeable, allowing rainwater to infiltrate naturally. For projects that are heavily loaded or where low maintenance is desired, jointing mortar offers a clear advantage.

Smarter solutions for every project
In recent years, new, innovative jointing solutions have been developed that largely overcome the limitations of traditional materials. For example, there is water-permeable jointing sand that not only remains stable in place but also inhibits weed growth. In addition, there are ready-to-use jointing mortars that are simply swept into the joints and harden automatically upon contact with oxygen. For very narrow joints, flexible mortars provide a sturdy bond, while robust two-component systems prove their strength in wider joints and under heavy loads.
Thanks to these advances, you no longer have to choose between simple or durable. Today, there is a jointing solution for every type of project—both practical and aesthetic—that meets the demands of modern outdoor spaces.
