A green roof or sedum roof is a sustainable solution that improves water retention, enhances biodiversity, and extends the lifespan of your roof. A sedum roof, such as the ECCOsedum system, requires little maintenance but is not completely maintenance-free. To keep your roof in top condition, some occasional upkeep is needed. Fortunately, this is quick and easy!

In this blog post, you’ll learn how to maintain your sedum roof in 5 simple steps and enjoy a lush, healthy green roof all year round.

Step 1: Clean the green roof (twice a year)

A sedum roof collects leaves, twigs, and other organic debris, which can disrupt the growth of the sedum. A thick layer of leaves can block sunlight and airflow, affecting plant health. That’s why it’s essential to clean your roof twice a year.

In spring (March – April) and autumn (September – October), remove leaves, branches, and any dead plant matter. Use a leaf blower on a low setting or a soft brush to clear debris without damaging the plants.

Tip: Noticed bare patches during maintenance? No problem! Simply trim longer sedum plants and spread the cuttings over the bare spots to encourage regrowth.

Step 2: Remove weeds and moss

Although sedum roofs are naturally weed-resistant, unwanted plants or moss can still appear, especially in the first few years after installation.

  • Inspect the roof each season for weeds and remove them by gently pulling them out with the root.
  • Check for moss, particularly in shaded areas. Excessive moss growth often indicates a nutrient deficiency, so fertilization may help.

Tip: Avoid chemical herbicides, as they can damage the sedum and disrupt the ecosystem.

Step 3: Check the water drainage

A green roof retains rainwater, but excess water should be able to drain properly. Regularly check that the drainage system or gutters are not clogged with dirt, leaves, or moss.

  • After heavy rainfall, check if water drains properly.
  • Clear any blockages if you notice water pooling on the roof.

Tip: Proper drainage prevents overloading the roof and protects the structure from moisture damage.

Step 4: Fertilize the sedum roof (1-2 times a year)

Sedum plants require minimal maintenance, but occasional fertilization promotes healthy growth and strong roots. Since the substrate layer is relatively thin and nutrients are washed away with rainwater, it’s important to replenish them at least once a year, preferably in spring (March-April). Ideally, fertilize again in autumn (September) to prepare the sedum for extreme temperatures and ensure it stays dense and vibrant.

  • Use a special sedum fertilizer containing minerals like potassium and phosphorus.
  • Spread the fertilizer evenly across the roof, ideally before or during rainfall for optimal absorption. If no rain is expected, lightly water the roof after applying the fertilizer.

Tip: Fertilization helps sedum remain dense and strong, reducing the chance of weed and moss growth.

Step 5: Water during extreme drought

Sedum roofs are drought-resistant, especially once fully rooted and mature. Generally, additional watering is unnecessary, as sedum stores water in its leaves. However, during extended heatwaves and prolonged dry periods (4+ weeks), extra watering may be beneficial.

  • Water in the morning or evening to minimize evaporation.
  • Use a watering can or garden hose with a spray nozzle for even distribution.

Tip: If your sedum turns red or purple, it’s experiencing drought stress and could use some extra water. However, sedum also naturally turns red in autumn—this is normal and does not indicate dehydration.

Conclusion: maintaining a green roof is easy!

With these 5 simple steps, your sedum roof will stay lush and green year after year:

  • Cleaning twice a year promotes healthy sedum growth.
  • Removing weeds and moss prevents overgrowth.
  • Checking water drainage protects the roof from moisture damage.
  • Fertilizing at least once a year keeps the sedum strong.
  • Watering during extreme drought helps sedum stay hydrated.
