Multidal is the gravel grid for heavy and frequent traffic, from fire access roads to public car parks. Its high compressive strength makes it suitable for intensively driven surfaces. Also usable as a grass infill.
-
Grass or gravel: one slab for both infills
Multidal is designed for both grass and gravel infill and works with all gravel types with a fraction up to 25 mm. This gives the landscape contractor the freedom to keep the choice open until the very last moment, or to use the same system on projects with different requirements. A closed base for stability and still highly permeable to water, so that rainwater infiltrates into the subsoil.
-
Stable for slopes up to 20%
Driveways and garden paths are rarely perfectly level. Multidal is the only product in the ECCO grass grid range that is certified suitable for sloped surfaces up to 20%. The closed base and simple click system ensure the panels remain stable even on a slope without sliding away, which is a common problem with gravel infill without a supporting structure.
-
Quick to install thanks to the large format and simple click system
With a size of 113.2 × 78.3 cm (0.89 m² per slab), you can cover a parking space or driveway faster than with smaller tiles. The click system connects the slabs quickly and without tools, and can also be handled by one person: one slab weighs 3.75 kg. Ergonomic design, easy to maintain, and available in black (100% recycled material) or white.

How do I install Multidal with gravel?
Step 1: Excavation works
Carry out the necessary excavation works and always remove the topsoil down to load-bearing ground. The bearing capacity of this layer must be at least 20 MPa.
Step 2: Edgings
Install the kerbs. These protrude 2 cm above the top of the panel.
Step 3: Foundation trench (only for applications with cars)
Install the foundation trench/sub-base to a depth of at least 25 cm, in layers of max. 20 cm, and compact with a vibrating plate. Use, for example, limestone chippings, porphyry chippings or crushed concrete rubble (0-32 mm or 0-40 mm). Brick rubble is not recommended, as it will crumble over time.
Step 4: Levelling layer
Apply the levelling layer in fine gravel, vibrate and level. With cars it is 5 cm deep, without cars 15 cm. To be carried out in limestone or porphyry (2-4 mm, 1-3 mm or 0-4 mm) or in screened sand.
Step 5: Installing Multidal
Lay the first panel parallel to the edging and click the next panels into place using the coupling system (can be uncoupled again if necessary). Lay the panels in a stretcher bond: start the second row with a half panel (cut with a cutting disc) and the third row again with a full panel. Continue like this to finish the entire surface.
Step 6: Gravel
Add the gravel and level with a shovel, brush, rake and screed; do not compact the decorative gravel. Keep the gravel 1 to 2 cm above the panels (1 cm for finer gravel, 2 cm for coarser gravel types); due to natural compaction it will settle a bit more. Grading with cars: 8 to 25 mm, without cars: 4 to 25 mm.

Step 2: Edging
Install the kerbs. They protrude 2 cm above the top of the slab.
Step 3: Foundation trench (only when used with vehicles)
Install the foundation trench at least 25 cm deep with foundation substrate, which provides both a base and nutrients. Then compact the foundation trench, for example with a heavy roller.
Step 4: Bedding substrate
Apply the levelling layer with bedding substrate. For vehicle traffic it is 5 cm deep; without vehicles it is 15 cm (due to the absence of a foundation trench).
Step 5: Installing Multidal
Lay the first slab parallel to the edging and click the next slabs into place using the coupling system (can be uncoupled again if necessary). Lay the slabs in a staggered bond: start the second row with a half slab (cut with a cutting disc) and the third row again with a full slab. Continue like this to finish the entire surface.
Step 6: Grass-dal substrate
Fill the slabs with grass-dal substrate to approx. 1 cm (max. 0.5 cm) from the edge and brush it out thoroughly for an even, level surface. Tip: never fill the slabs using only topsoil, as it compacts too much and prevents the grass seed from germinating.
Step 7 — Sowing
Sow the grass in the Multidal.
Step 8: Waiting period
After 6 to 8 weeks you can put the grass parking area into use. In case of intensive use, it is best to wait 16 weeks so the grass can grow in densely. In the meantime, mowing can already be done.

Frequently asked questions
-
Can the Multidal also be used as a base under a garden shed?
No. The ideal base for a garden shed is a concrete slab. The Multidal is not suitable for this, certainly not without a deeply excavated foundation trench.
-
Is it necessary to place a weed control membrane under the Multidal?
A weed control membrane helps prevent weed seeds in the soil from growing up through the Multidal. However, it does not prevent seeds from landing on the surface and germinating there. It contributes to a more low-maintenance paved surface, but does not guarantee complete weed prevention.
-
Is the Multidal suitable for use in combination with grass?
Yes, but keep one limitation in mind: growth will be about 20% lower than with a traditional grass grid. The bottom of the Multidal is denser, which gives the roots less room to grow.
The Multidal is not a replacement for a grass grid; it is specifically designed to combine gravel and grass—something a standard grass grid cannot offer.
