The challenge
Ten Bogaerde Arts Centre brings different worlds together: historic brick architecture, contemporary art, and an open landscape setting. The outdoor space therefore needed to be functional, without dominating.
Visitors must be able to move around the site comfortably, including during exhibitions, events, or peak visiting times. A classic loose gravel surface would be less suitable here, because loose gravel can shift, cause rutting, and is less comfortable to walk on.
In addition, the paving needed to match the understated, natural character of the surroundings. The outdoor space was not meant to push the architecture and the art into the background, but rather to form a calm base that enhances the whole.
Water permeability also played an important role. Rainwater needed to be able to infiltrate locally, without the site losing its well-kept appearance or accessibility.
