Why choose a green roof?

A well-designed green roof offers demonstrable benefits:
  • Water management

green roofs retain a large part of the rainwater and discharge it more slowly. This eases the load on the sewer network and reduces flooding.

  • Protection of the roof structure

the roof covering is less exposed to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations thanks to the protective vegetation layer, which extends its lifespan.

  • Thermal and acoustic insulation

a green roof works as an extra insulation layer and dampens noise from rain or traffic.

  • Biodiversity

sedum and herbs attract bees and insects, thereby creating valuable nature in urbanised environments.

  • Visual added value

Green roofs bring calm and greenery to any construction project, from commercial buildings to residential roofs.

Construction of a sustainable green roof

A technically correct green roof consists of layers that work together for drainage, protection, and plant growth. Below you can see the recommended build-up according to the steps of a sedum roof system.

  • 1. Roof covering & load-bearing capacity

First check whether the roof covering is in good condition (bitumen, EPDM, PVC) and whether the roof structure has sufficient load-bearing capacity (a sedum roof with tiles weighs between approx. 35–55 kg/m², depending on the system).

  • 2. Root-resistant foil

Install a root barrier membrane to prevent roots from sedum or other plants from damaging the roofing.

  • 3. Optional: synthetic fleece

A synthetic fleece can provide extra protection and enable additional water buffering.

  • 4. Sedum tiles (vegetation layer)

Lay sedum tiles or sedum trays with a click system on the pre-prepared surface. Keep a vegetation-free zone of approximately 30 cm along the roof edge, for example filled with roof gravel.

Maintenance & service life

A well-designed green roof requires little maintenance, but is not completely maintenance-free:

  • Remove weeds and tree seedlings twice a year.
  • Fertilise once a year, for example in spring, with a light sedum fertiliser for healthy plant growth.
  • Check gravel borders and drains and remove leaves and debris.
  • During prolonged drought, additional watering may be necessary.

Thanks to its robust build-up and durable materials, a green roof lasts for decades and retains its ecological benefits.

The power of ECCOsedum

The lightweight and modular ECCOsedum system is made up of multiple layers that together provide drainage, water retention, and healthy plant growth.
At slopes of up to 15° the system can be installed without additional measures.

Each tray contains three essential layers:

  1. Drainage layer – drains excess rainwater in a controlled manner.
  2. Substrate layer – nourishes the vegetation and retains water.
  3. Vegetation layer – a densely grown mat with various sedum species, supplied with at least 80% coverage.
