The challenge
Ten Bogaerde Arts Centre brings different worlds together: historic brick architecture, contemporary art and an open, landscaped setting. The outdoor space therefore had to be functional, without dominating.
Visitors need to be able to move comfortably around the site, including during exhibitions, events or peak visiting times. A classic loose gravel surface would be less suitable here, because loose gravel can shift, cause ruts and is less comfortable to walk on.
In addition, the paving had to suit the understated, natural character of the surroundings. The outdoor space should not push the architecture and the art into the background, but rather provide a calm base that strengthens the whole.
Water permeability also played an important role. Rainwater needed to be able to infiltrate locally, without the site losing its well-kept appearance or accessibility.
