In a city like Ghent, where buildings and hard surfaces take up a large part of the available space, there isn’t always room for additional greenery. Still, green spaces play an important role in absorbing rainwater, supporting biodiversity and limiting heat in the city.
For this private home, the flat roof offered a great opportunity to create extra greenery without taking up any additional ground area.
The challenge? To create a low-maintenance and sustainable green roof that is easy to install and fits in with the existing surroundings.

The challenge? To create a low-maintenance and sustainable green roof that is easy to install and fits in with the existing surroundings.
For this project, ECCOsedum was chosen, a system of pre-grown sedum trays that allows a flat roof to be greened quickly and easily.
The trays contain various sedum species that are well suited to changing weather conditions and require little maintenance. Thanks to the modular system, the trays can be placed neatly side by side, creating an instant green roof covering.
In addition, ECCOsedum helps to temporarily retain rainwater and release it more slowly. This means the sewer network is less quickly overloaded during heavy rainfall.
The green roof also offers ecological added value. The sedum planting provides an additional habitat for insects and contributes to biodiversity, even in the middle of the city.

What used to be a classic flat roof is now a green addition to the urban environment.
Together, the sedum trays create a natural roof covering that blends beautifully with the surrounding greenery. From inside the home, the roof offers a more pleasant view, while also contributing to rainwater management and biodiversity.
With ECCOsedum, an unused roof surface was transformed into a functional green space. A fine example of how even smaller roofs in the city can contribute to a more sustainable living environment.
