Multidal is the gravel grid for heavy and frequent traffic, from emergency access roads to public car parks. Its high compressive strength makes it suitable for surfaces subjected to intensive traffic. Also suitable for use as grass infill.
-
Grass or gravel: one slab for both infills
Multidal is designed for both grass and gravel infill and works with all gravel types with a fraction up to 25 mm. This gives the landscape contractor the freedom to keep the choice open until the very last moment, or to use the same system on projects with different requirements. A closed base for stability, yet still highly permeable to water, so that rainwater infiltrates into the ground.
-
Stable for slopes up to 20%
Driveways and garden paths are rarely perfectly level. Multidal is the only product in the ECCO grass paver range that is certified as suitable for sloped surfaces up to 20%. The closed base and the simple click system ensure that the panels remain stable even on a slope without sliding, which is a common problem with gravel infill without a supporting structure.
-
Quick to lay thanks to the large format and simple click system
With a size of 113.2 × 78.3 cm (0.89 m² per panel), you can cover a parking space or driveway faster than with smaller slabs. The click system connects the panels quickly and without tools, and can also be handled by one person: a panel weighs 3.75 kg. Ergonomic design, easy to maintain and available in black (100% recycled material) or white.

How do I install Multidal with gravel?
Step 1: Excavation work
Carry out the necessary excavation work and always remove the topsoil down to load-bearing ground. The bearing capacity of this layer must be at least 20 MPa.
Step 2: Edgings
Install the kerbs. These should protrude 2 cm above the top of the slab.
Step 3: Foundation trench (only when used with vehicles)
Install the foundation/sub-base at least 25 cm deep, in layers of max. 20 cm, and compact with a vibrating plate compactor. Use, for example, limestone chippings, porphyry chippings or crushed concrete rubble (0–32 mm or 0–40 mm). Brick rubble is not recommended, as it will crumble over time.
Step 4: Levelling layer
Lay the levelling layer in fine gravel, vibrate and level it. With vehicles it should be 5 cm deep; without vehicles, 15 cm. To be carried out in limestone or porphyry (2–4 mm, 1–3 mm or 0–4 mm) or in screened sand.
Step 5: Laying Multidal
Lay the first slab parallel to the edging and click the next slabs into place using the coupling system (can be uncoupled again if necessary). Lay the slabs in a staggered bond: start the second row with half a slab (cut with a cutting disc) and the third row again with a full slab. Continue like this to finish the entire area.
Step 6: Gravel
Place the gravel and level it with a shovel, brush, rake and screed; do not compact decorative gravel. Leave the gravel 1 to 2 cm above the slabs (1 cm for finer gravel, 2 cm for coarser types); it will settle a little further due to natural compaction. Grading with vehicles: 8 to 25 mm; without vehicles: 4 to 25 mm.

Step 2: Edgings
Install the kerbs. These protrude 2 cm above the top of the slab.
Step 3: Foundation trench (only when used with cars)
Install the foundation trench at least 25 cm deep with foundation substrate, which provides both foundation and nutrients. Then apply weight to the foundation trench, for example with a heavy roller.
Step 4: Bedding substrate
Lay the levelling layer using bedding substrate. With cars it is 5 cm deep; without cars 15 cm (due to the absence of a foundation trench).
Step 5: Installing Multidal
Lay the first slab parallel to the edging and clip the next slabs in place using the coupling system (can be unclipped again if necessary). Lay the slabs in stretcher bond: start the second row with half a slab (cut with a cutting disc) and the third row again with a full slab. Finish the entire surface in this way.
Step 6: Grasdalsubstraat
Fill the slabs with grass valley substrate to approx. 1 cm (max. 0.5 cm) from the edge and brush it out thoroughly for an even, level surface. Tip: never fill the slabs using only topsoil, as it compacts too much and prevents the grass seed from germinating.
Step 7 — Sowing
Sow the grass in the Multidal.
Step 8: Waiting period
After 6 to 8 weeks you can start using the grass parking area. With intensive use it’s best to wait 16 weeks so that the grass can grow in densely. In the meantime it can already be mown.

Frequently asked questions
-
Can Multidal also be used as a base under a garden shed?
No. The ideal base for a garden shed is a concrete slab. The Multidal is not suitable for this, certainly not without a deeply excavated foundation trench.
-
Is it necessary to place anti-weed fabric under the Multidal?
A weed control membrane helps prevent weed seeds from the soil growing up through the Multidal. However, it does not stop seeds landing on the surface and germinating there. It contributes to a more low-maintenance surface, but does not guarantee complete weed prevention.
-
Is the Multidal suitable for use in combination with grass?
Yes, but bear in mind one limitation: growth will be around 20% lower than with a traditional grass grid. The underside of the Multidal is denser, which means the roots have less room to grow.
The Multidal is not a replacement for a grass grid, but is specifically designed to combine gravel and grass — something a standard grass grid cannot provide.
