The challenge

Ten Bogaerde Arts Centre brings different worlds together: historic brick architecture, contemporary art and an open landscape setting. The outdoor space therefore needed to be functional, without dominating.

Visitors must be able to move comfortably around the site, including during exhibitions, events or busy visiting periods. A traditional loose gravel surface would be less suitable here, because loose gravel can shift, cause rutting and is less comfortable to walk on.

In addition, the surfacing had to match the understated, natural character of the surroundings. The outdoor space was not meant to push the architecture and the art into the background, but rather to provide a calm foundation that enhances the whole.

Water permeability also played an important role. Rainwater needed to be able to infiltrate locally, without the site losing its well-kept appearance or accessibility.
