Choosing the right gravel grid mat

ECCOgravel is available in various heights. For light applications such as garden paths or terraces, a lower panel is often sufficient. For driveways, car parks or areas with car traffic, it’s better to choose a stronger structure.

The heavier the load, the more important the right combination of panel height, gravel type and foundation.

Which gravel do you use?

Not all gravel is suitable for gravel grids. Ideally, choose gravel with a grain size between 4 and 16 mm. This way it stays well in the honeycomb structure and the surface remains stable.

For pedestrian areas, the gravel can be finer. For driveways or car parks, it’s better to choose slightly coarser, crushed gravel. It interlocks better and shifts less quickly than rounded pebbles.

Hardness also plays a role. Harder stone types stay attractive for longer, crumble less quickly and retain less moisture.

A good foundation makes all the difference

A good-looking gravel surface starts below ground. The base determines how stable the end result will be.

With ECCOgravel, no traditional drainage slope is needed, because rainwater infiltrates through the gravel and the underlying layers. A frost-free depth like with concrete or asphalt is also not required. The build-up is mainly determined by the intended use: a garden path requires less foundation than a driveway.

Installing grind mats in 6 steps

  • 1. Excavate the subsoil

First remove the topsoil and excavate to the correct depth. Then place the kerbstones or edging. They keep the paving neatly in place.

  • 2. Build the foundation

Apply a water-permeable foundation layer, for example using limestone chippings, porphyry chippings or crushed concrete rubble. Compact the foundation thoroughly in layers so that the sub-base does not subside later.

  • 3. Finish with a levelling layer

On top of the base comes a fine levelling layer. This ensures the ECCOgravel panels lie flat and stable.

  • 4. Lay the ECCOgravel slabs

Place the gravel mats on the level surface, preferably in a staggered bond pattern. Cut the panels to size where necessary. The geotextile underneath helps prevent gravel from getting under the panels.

  • 5. Fill with gravel

Fill the honeycomb structure completely with gravel. Do not drive over unfilled panels. Leave the gravel about 1 to 2 cm above the panel so that the structure becomes nicely invisible.

  • 6. Check after a few weeks

After the first few weeks, the gravel may still settle a little. Rake the surface level again and add some gravel if necessary. After that, the surface will remain stable and easy to maintain.

Tough work, no fuss

With ECCOgravel, you combine the natural look of gravel with the comfort of a solid surface. No deep ruts, less shifting gravel and a surface that lets water drain away easily.

Ideal for driveways, car parks, garden paths and other outdoor spaces where appearance and ease of use need to go hand in hand.
