Why choose a green roof?

A well-installed green roof offers demonstrable benefits:
  • Water management

Green roofs retain a large proportion of the rainwater and release it more slowly. This reduces the burden on the sewer network and decreases the risk of flooding.

  • Protection of the roof structure

the roofing is less exposed to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations thanks to the protective vegetation layer, which extends its lifespan.

  • Thermal and acoustic insulation

a green roof acts as an extra layer of insulation and dampens the noise of rain or traffic.

  • Biodiversity

sedum and herbs attract bees and insects, thus creating valuable nature in urbanised environments.

  • Visual added value

green roofs bring tranquillity and greenery to every building project, from commercial buildings to residential roofs.

Construction of a sustainable green roof

A technically correct green roof consists of layers that work together for drainage, protection and plant growth. Below you can see the recommended build-up according to the steps of a sedum roof system.

  • 1. Roofing & load-bearing capacity

First check that the roof covering is in good condition (bitumen, EPDM, PVC) and that the roof structure has sufficient load-bearing capacity (a sedum roof with tiles weighs between approx. 35–55 kg/m², depending on the system).

  • 2. Root-resistant membrane

Install a root barrier membrane to prevent roots from sedum or other plants from damaging the roofing.

  • 3. Optional: synthetic fleece

A synthetic fleece can provide extra protection and enable additional water buffering.

  • 4. Sedum tiles (vegetation layer)

Lay sedum tiles or sedum trays with a click system on the pre-prepared base. Leave a vegetation-free strip of around 30 cm at the roof edge, for example filled with roof gravel.

Maintenance & service life

A well-designed green roof requires little maintenance, but is not entirely maintenance-free:

  • Remove weeds and tree seedlings twice a year.
  • Fertilise once a year, for example in spring, with a light sedum fertiliser for healthy plant growth.
  • Check gravel borders and drains, and remove leaves and debris.
  • During prolonged dry spells, additional watering may be necessary.

Thanks to its robust structure and durable materials, a green roof will last for decades and continue to retain its ecological benefits.

The power of ECCOsedum

The lightweight and modular ECCOsedum system is built up of multiple layers that together provide drainage, water retention and healthy plant growth.
On slopes up to 15° the system can be installed without additional measures.

Each tray contains three essential layers:

  1. Drainage layer – drains excess rainwater in a controlled manner.
  2. Substrate layer – nourishes the vegetation and retains water.
  3. Vegetation layer – a densely grown mat with different sedum species, supplied with at least 80% coverage.
